Mrs. Ethel K. (Russeau) Fountain

Mrs. Ethel K. (Russeau) Fountain

Ethel K. Fountain graduated from Monroe High School. She worked as a switchboard operator back in the day when you had to plug the connection into an actual switchboard. In her later years, she worked for The Monroe Evening News as a paper assembler, putting all the inserts and ads into the paper.

Ethel was a lifelong member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and a member at the Monroe Senior Center, where she frequently enjoyed a good game of euchre.

Ethel believed that education was the key to earning a good living. She was a bit old-fashioned in her way of thinking. She thought that a man was responsible for providing for his family and with education or training he could support a family and get ahead.

Ethel Russeau was born and lived until the age of 90 in Monroe. She had two sisters and three brothers. While still young, her mother contracted polio and was never able to walk again. Ethel helped around the house and ‘mothered’ her younger siblings. She married Ronald J. Fountain at St. Michael’s in Monroe in 1952. Ethel and Ron had no children, but were a special part of the lives of dozens of nieces and nephews.

Ethel and Ron never had typically high-paying employment but were hard workers and excellent savers and investors. Several years ago, realizing that she had amassed an amount of money that could make a large impact upon the recipient, started to research options. Monroe County Community College turned out to be the right fit. She had grown up poor, in a family that couldn’t afford to send anyone to college. She especially wanted to help the fathers of young, struggling families achieve better employment through education and training.
