LaVerne and Ann Rothman
The Brian Rothman Memorial Scholarship was established by his parents LaVerne and Ann Rothman. To them, this scholarship means his legacy will live on by giving a deserving student the opportunity to continue their education.
Born and raised in Monroe, Brian attended Monroe Public Schools from kindergarten through 12th grade graduating co-valedictorian of the Monroe High School class of 1983. While in high school, he was a member of First Choir and was selected to sing with the State Honors Choir for two years. Brian was awarded a scholarship to Eastern Michigan University but determined that MCCC was the best choice for his future and never regretted the decision. It put him on a path to a successful career and bright future. He attended MCCC graduating with an Associate Degree in Computer Science. He transferred to the University of Toledo earning a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Engineering. While at UT, he was a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society and Tau Beta Pi National Engineering Honor Society.
Over his successful career, Brian started as a co-op student at Wendy’s his senior year and continued to work there until he graduated from UT. He was hired by La-Z-Boy, Inc. in their computer department. He then went on to work for K-Mart Corp. in Troy, MI as a computer programmer. In 2006, Brian was asked by K-Mart to become part of the team at Sears Holdings in Hoffman Estates, IL. as a software engineer. His combined employment with Sears Corp. would last over 23 years. With his higher educational achievements enabled him to enjoy working for a company that allowed him to grow and succeed in his field of computer science.
Brian was not only strong in his education and career but also in his faith. He was a life member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Monroe. He was a member of the youth group attending several national conferences; member and director of the choir, served on the church council and was the church treasurer. He was also a member of the Tyner Chorale. Upon moving to Illinois, Brian became a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Elgin, IL. As a member, he was part of the church choir, church council, and church treasurer and chaired the worship committee while volunteering with the Illinois Food Bank.
Jeremiah 29:11 gave meaning to Brian’s life. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declared the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
