Iva C. Mennig Trust

The Iva C. Mennig Trust established this scholarship in honor of Henry and Mary Guire, the parents of Mrs. Mennig, a longtime high school teacher in Toledo and Monroe who thought her first day of school was “just like a picnic.”

Mrs. Mennig’s love of education continued throughout her life. Growing up on a working farm in Newport, Michigan, she boarded with her aunt and uncle to attend Monroe High School, where she graduated in 1916. She went on to receive a Bachelor’s degree from Michigan Normal College (now Eastern Michigan University), and her Master’s degree from Columbia University in New York. She also attended the University of Michigan.

She passed her love of education on to her students, spending most of her career at Riverside High School and DeVilbiss High School in Toledo before returning to Monroe to teach the last eight years of her career at Jefferson High School.
