Helen M. and Eugene W. Beach
Helen and Eugene Beach embody the American success story, both growing up economically disadvantaged during the depression. Through determination and hard work, they developed a successful business in Monroe County, and afterwards, they helped dozens of MCCC students and their employees in their efforts to achieve a higher education.
Helen Beach graduated as a registered nurse through a program at Maumee Valley Hospital School of Nursing that provided room, board, tuition, and a small living stipend. Eugene Beach, a graduate of Worshem Mortuary Science School in Chicago, worked at a variety of professions while they raised a family of three. One day, a local family asked if they would help care for an elderly father. From there, they started a business of caring for the elderly that became the Beach Nursing Home in 1950 and grew to 192 patients.
The opportunity to pursue higher education was so important to Mr. and Mrs. Beach, that they offered financial assistance to their employees to attend college. Mrs. Beach established the Eugene W. Beach Scholarship in 1984 to honor her husband and to “give back to her community.” In 1992, the scholarship was renamed in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Beach.
