Hallie H. Billmire Estate

The Hallie H. Billmire Scholarship was established by the Hallie H. Billmire estate in 2009 to provide one scholarship each year to a Monroe County, Michigan resident.

The daughter of Mabel and Chris Helser, Mrs. Billmire, born 1910, grew up on a farm near Maybee, Michigan. Her father believed his daughters deserved an education. Her sister Gladys became a registered nurse. Hallie was a 1926 graduate of Monroe High School. Hallie went on to receive her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Michigan Normal College (now Eastern Michigan University) in 1948 and a Master of Arts Degree from Wayne State University in 1952. She married Earl A. Billmire in Buffalo, New York, in 1934.

She was an educator for more than 43 years, with 29 of those years at Monroe Public Schools. She began her career as an elementary teacher in a one room school house. In 1954, she became the first principal of Riverside Elementary School from which she retired.

Hallie was a former director of Camp Fire Girls, a member of the Thrift Shop Association of Monroe, and was a life member of both the Michigan and National Education Association. She enjoyed playing bridge with a passion.

“My aunt was a really tough lady” her nephew, Don J. Helser said. “She said if you can read and write, you have the keys.” She believed literacy ensured progress for America and individual citizens.
