Corl-Gaynier AMVETS POST 1942

Corl-Gaynier AMVETS POST 1942

The Corl-Gaynier AMVETS Post 1942 was chartered on November 1, 2006. AMVETS Post is named after two local Monroe County, Michigan, heroes of WWII. They were both torpedo plane pilots at the epic Battle of Midway in 1942.

Oswald Gaynier was lost during the battle and Harry Corl was one of a tiny handful that survived. Harry Corl was killed two months later at the Battle of Solomon Islands. Both men received the nation’s second highest award for extraordinary valor, the Navy Cross, and both men had WWII Navy ships named after them. Both men are buried at sea inside their planes.
